The Central Texas Groundwater Conservation District has reduced the drought stage from Stage 3 (Severe) to Stage 2 (Moderate) due to beneficial rainfall experienced across the region in May. This much-needed rainfall has helped relieve some of the stress on local aquifers.
Groundwater levels are still recovering from multiple years of below-average rainfall. Unlike surface water reservoirs that can respond rapidly to heavy rains, aquifers typically benefit from sustained, long-term wet conditions.
Under Stage 2, the District encourages continued water conservation and requests voluntary reductions in groundwater use by 10%.
