District Lowers Drought Stage from 4 to 2 Following July Rainfall

by Tracy | Aug 1, 2025

The Central Texas Groundwater Conservation District has reduced the drought stage from Stage 4 (Critical) to Stage 2 (Moderate) due to significant rainfall and flooding experienced across the region in July. This much-needed rainfall has helped relieve some of the stress on local aquifers.

While this is a positive development, groundwater levels are still recovering from multiple years of below-average rainfall. Unlike surface water reservoirs that can respond rapidly to heavy rains, aquifers typically benefit from sustained, long-term wet conditions.

Under Stage 2, the District encourages continued water conservation and requests voluntary reductions in groundwater use by 10%. All mandatory drought restrictions for 2025 non-exempt wells have been rescinded at this time.
